The Potential, Obligative and Conditional Verbs
Probability, ability, obligation and conditions are expressed by adding bahudu, balle, bēku, ē and ēnē.
Potential
In modern Kannada bahudu is added to the infinitive of the main verb to indicate probability.
| ಹೋಗು | to go | ನೀನು ಹೋಗಬಹುದು | you may go |
| ಬರು | to come | ನೀನು ಬರಬಹುದು | you may come |
| ಓದು | to read | ಅವನು ಓದಬಹುದು | he may read |
| ಇರು | to stay | ಅವಳು ಇರಬಹುದು | she may stay |
| ಮಾಡು | to do | ನಾನು ಮಾಡಬಹುದು | I may do |
balle (I know, you know)), balla (he knows), ballaḷu (she knows), and balludu, balluvu (neuter) are used giving the meaning of ability in modern Kannada. Examples:
| ನಾನು ಬರಬಲ್ಲೆ(ನು) | I can come ( I will be able to come) |
| ನೀನು ಮಾಡಬಲ್ಲೆ | You can do |
| ಅವನು ಓದಬಲ್ಲ(ನು) | He can read |
| ಅವಳು ಬರಬಲ್ಲಳು | She can come |
Obligative
In modern Kannada, bēku (needed) is added to the infinitive to mean that it is necessary. For example, māḍabēku means that ‘it is necessary to do’, ‘it needs to be done’. nīnu ōdabēku means that ‘you are needed to study’, ‘it is necessary for you to study’. Examples:
| ನೀನು ಮಾಡಬೇಕು | It is necessary for you to do / You should do |
| ಅವರು ಬರಬೇಕು | They should come |
| ಅವಳು ಓದಬೇಕು | She should read |
To make it more obligatory, the verbal forms like ē is added to another affirmative verb.
| ನಾನು ಓದಲೇಬೇಕು | I must read |
| ನೀನು ಬರಲೇಬೇಕು | You must come |
| ನೀವು ಹೋಗಲೇಬೇಕು | You (pl.) go |
| ನಾನು ತಿನ್ನಲೇಬೇಕು | I must eat. |
āgabēku is also added to the adverbial participle to give obligatory meaning.
| ನಾನು ಓದಿ ಆಗಬೇಕು | I must read |
Conditional
Conditional verbs are formed by adding re or rēnē to the infinitive.
| ನೀನು ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ನಾನು ನೋಡುತ್ತೇನೆ | I will see if you do. |
| ಅವನು ಬಂದರೆ ನಾನು ಹೋಗುತ್ತೇನೆ | I will go if he comes. |
| ಅವರು ಕೇಳಿದರೇನೇ ನಾವು ಕೊಡುತ್ತೇವೆ | We will give only if they ask. |
| ನೀನು ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿದರೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು | It is good if you read books. |
| ನಾನು ಮನೆಯನ್ನು ಕೊಂಡುಕೊಂಡರೇನೇ ಅವನು ಕೊಂಡುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ | He will buy a house only if I buy. |

2. Translate into English.
ಆಕೆ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಹಾಡುತ್ತಾಳೆ.
ಆ ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳು ಪ್ರತಿವರ್ಷ ನಮ್ಮ ದೇಶಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುತ್ತವೆ.
ನೀನು ಕರೆದರೆ ಅವನು ಬರುತ್ತಾನೆ.
ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದರೆ ನಗು ಬರುತ್ತದೆ.
ಅವರು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾತಾಡಬಲ್ಲರು.
ಅವಳನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದರೆ ಹಾಡುತ್ತಾಳೆ.
