The Future Tense
The future tense describes an action that will take place in the future. All the changes in the present tense take place in the future tense. It is to be noted that the future tense markers in Old and Medieval Kannada are no longer used in Modern Kannada except in literary writings, Examples:
| ನಾನು ಮಾಡುವೆನು | I will do |
| ನಾವು ಮಾಡುವೆವು | We will do |
| ನೀನು ಮಾಡುವೆ | You (sing.) will do |
| ನೀವು ಮಾಡುವಿರಿ | You (pl.) will do |
| ಅವನು ಮಾಡುವನು | He will do |
| ಅವಳು ಮಾಡುವಳು | She will do |
| ಅದು ಮಾಡುವುದು | It will do |
| ಅವು ಮಾಡುವುವು | They (neuter) will do |
In modern Kannada, to specify the future meaning in the constructions of present tense, adverbs of time, such as ‘tomorrow’ are generally used in the sentences. Examples:
| ನಾನು ನಾಳೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಂಡುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇನೆ | I will buy the books tomorrow |
| ನೀವು ನಾಳಿದ್ದು ಹೋಗುತ್ತೀರಾ? | Are you going day-after-tomorrow? |
| ಅವರು ಹಂಪಿಯಿಂದ ಬರುತ್ತಾರೆ | He (respect) will come from Hampi |
| ಆಕೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದುತ್ತಾಳೆ | She will read this book |
| ಅವರು ಎರಡು ಹಾಡುಗಳನ್ನು ಹಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ | They will sing two songs |
| ಆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ನಾಳೆ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ | That book will arrive tomorrow |
| ಈ ಬಸ್ಸುಗಳು ನಾಳೆ ಚೆನ್ನೈ ತಲಪುತ್ತವೆ | These busses reach Chennai tomorrow |
The hortative verb in Kannada is used by adding the suffix dā. It will be in the first person plural (inclusive) and gives the meaning of the English ‘let us’. Examples:
| ನಾವು ಹೋಗೋಣ | Let us go |
| ನಾವು ನಾಳೆ ಓದೋಣ | Let us read tomorrow |
| ನಾವು ಆ ಮೂವೀ ನೋಡೋಣ | Let us watch that movie |
| ನಾವೆಲ್ಲಾ ನಾಳೆ ಹಾಡೋಣ | Let all of us sing tomorrow |

1.1. ಅವರು ನಾಳೆ .................. (ಬರು)
1.2. ಆಕೆ ನಾಳಿದ್ದು .................. (ಹಾಡು)
1.3. ನೀನು ನಾಳೆ .................. (ಹೋಗು)
1.4. ನಾಳೆ ಕೂಡ ಅವರು ಇಲ್ಲೇ .................. (ಇರು)
1.5. ಅವನು ಒಂದು ಮನೆಯನ್ನು .................. (ಕೊಂಡುಕೊಳ್ಳು)
2. Translate into Kannada:
2.1. I will write a book in English.
2.2. The train will arrive shortly.
2.3. You come tomorrow (pl.).
2.4. He will sing a song.
2.5. She will buy a book tomorrow.
2.6. They will ask two questions.
2.7. She will stay there for one day.
2.8. I will drink tea in that shop.
2.9. I will bring the book tomorrow.
2.10. They (neuter) will go to Hyderabad.
2.11. I will come to your house tomorrow.
2.12. She will read this book.
