The Interrogatives
1. The interrogative pronouns begin with e or ē. The interrogative adjective is yāva. Examples:

ಏನು ಬೇಕು? | what is needed? |
ನಿಮಗೇನು ಬೇಕು? | what do you (pl.) want? |
ಅದೇನು? | what is that? |
ಇಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಏಕೆ ಬಂದೆ? | why did you come here? |
ಏಕೆ? | why? |
ಎಷ್ಟು? | how much? |
ಎಷ್ಟು ದೂರ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದೀರಿ? | how far you (pl.) are going? |
ಎಲ್ಲಿ? | where? |
ಎಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದೀರಿ? | where are you (pl.) going? |
ಯಾವಾಗ? | when? |
ಹೇಗೆ? | how? |
ಹೇಗಿದ್ದೀರಿ? | how are you? |
ಯಾವನು? | who (m. casual)? |
ಯಾವಳು? | who (f. casual)? |
ಯಾರು? | who (human)? |
ಅವರು ಯಾರು? | who are they? |
ಅವಳು ಯಾರು? | who is she? |
2. The interrogative particle ā or ē is added at the end of the sentence.
ಅವರು ಈ ದಿನ ಬರುತ್ತಾರೆಯೇ? | does he (polite) come today? |
ನೀನು ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದುತ್ತೀಯಾ? | do you read books? |
ನಿಮ್ಮ ಸ್ವಂತ ಊರು ಯಾವುದು? ಮಂಗಳೂರೇ ? | which is your native place? Is it Mangalūru? |
3. Other examples
ನನ್ನ ಬಳಿ ಇದೆ | That book is with me |
ಆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ನನ್ನ ಬಳಿ ಇಲ್ಲ | That book is not with me |
ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಮನೆಗಳಿವೆ | There are houses there |
ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಮನೆಗಳಿಲ್ಲ | There are no houses there |
ಅವರು ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ | He(honorific) is in the house |
ಅವನು ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿಲ್ಲ | He is not in the house |
ಅವನು ನಾಳೆ ಬರುತ್ತಾನೆ | He will come tomorrow |
ಅವನು ನಾಳೆ ಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ | He will not come tomorrow |
ಆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ನನ್ನದು | That is my book |
ಆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ನನ್ನದಲ್ಲ | That is not my book |
ಅದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಊರು | That is a good village |
ಅದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಊರಲ್ಲ | That is not a good village |
Kannada has a negative marker which is added to the verb. The negative verb is formed by adding illa to the infinitive or future.
ನಾನು ಇವತ್ತುಆಡುತ್ತೇನೆ | I will play today |
ನಾನು ಇವತ್ತುಆಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ | I will not play today |
ಅವನು ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಾನೆ | He walks |
ಅವನು ನಡೆಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ | He does not walk |
ನಾನು ನಾಳೆ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ | I will come tomorrow |
ನಾನು ನಾಳೆ ಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ | I will not come tomorrow |
ನಾನು ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದೆ | I was in the house |
ನಾನು ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ | I was not be in the house |
ನನಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತು | I know |
ನನಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ | I do not know |
1. The negative imperative or prohibitive is formed by adding i and bēḍa (bēḍi in the plural).
ಕೆಲಸ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಿ | Do the work well |
ಕೆಲಸ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಬೇಡಿ | Do not do the work well |
ನಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಾ | Come to my (our) house |
ನಮ್ಮ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬರಬೇಡ | Do not come to my (our) house |
2. The negative adjectival participle is formed by adding ada to the verb.
ಅದು ಅವನು ಮಾಡದ ಕೆಲಸ | That is a work not done by him |
ಅವಳು ಓದದ ಪುಸ್ತಕ | That is the book which is not read by her |
Translate into Kannada.
1. I did not read that book.
2. She did not come to my house.
3. Do not laugh at me.
4. If you do not run, you cannot win.
5. He is not in the house.
6. If you do not tell him, he will not do.
7. They will not agree.
8. I did not run that day.
9. I do not eat banana.
10. Do not go away, read the book.
