Causative Suffixes

Kannada has separate causative suffixes which are different from the transitive (the verbs that take direct object) suffixes. The causative suffix is usually added to a transitive base.

1. The suffix isu is mostly added to form causative verbs.

ಆಡುto playಆಡಿಸುto cause play
ಹಾಡುto singಹಾಡಿಸುto cause sing
ಹೇಳುto tellಹೇಳಿಸುto cause tell
ಮಾಡುto doಮಾಡಿಸುto cause do

It is to be noted that isu is added to Sanskrit nouns and verbs to form transitive verbs. antemāḍu is also added to such verbs to make them causatives.

ರಕ್ಷಿಸುto protectರಕ್ಷಿಸುವಂತೆಮಾಡು
ಪೂಜಿಸುto worshipಪೂಜಿಸುವಂತೆಮಾಡು
