The Past Tense
In modern Kannada the past tense is indicated by adding d before personal endings. Examples:
1. Common verbs like ಆಡು (play), ಹಾಡು (sing), ಹಂಚು (distribute) etc.
| ನಾನು ಆಡಿದೆ(ನು) | I played |
| ನಾವು ಆಡಿದೆವು | We played |
| ನೀನು ಆಡಿದೆ | You played (singular) |
| ನೀವು ಆಡಿದಿರಿ | You played (plural) |
| ಅವನು ಆಡಿದ(ನು) | He played |
| ಅವಳು ಆಡಿದಳು | She played |
| ಅವರು ಆಡಿದರು | They played |
| ಅದು ಆಡಿತು | It played |
| ಅವು ಆಡಿದುವು | They played (neuter) |
2. ಆಗು (to become), ಹೋಗು (to go)
| ನಾನು ಆದೆ(ನು) | I became |
| ನಾವು ಆದೆವು | We became (exclusive) |
| ನಾವು ಆದೆವು | We became (inclusive) |
| ನೀನು ಆದೆ | You became |
| ನೀವು ಆದಿರಿ | You became |
| ಅವನು ಆದ(ನು) | He became |
| ಅವಳು ಆದಳು | She became |
| ಅವರು ಆದರು | They became |
| ಅದು ಆಯಿತು | It became |
| ಅವು ಆದುವು | They became (neuter) |
3. ತಿನ್ನು (eat), ಕೊಲ್ಲು (kill) etc.
| ನಾನು ತಿಂದೆ(ನು) | I ate |
| ನಾವು ತಿಂದೆವು | We ate |
| ನೀನು ತಿಂದೆ | You ate (singular) |
| ನೀವು ತಿಂದಿರಿ | You ate (plural) |
| ಅವನು ತಿಂದ(ನು) | He ate |
| ಅವಳು ತಿಂದಳು | She ate |
| ಅವರು ತಿಂದರು | They ate |
| ಅದು ತಿಂದಿತು | It ate |
| ಅವು ತಿಂದುವು | They ate (neuter) |
4. ಬೀಳು (fall), ಗೆಲ್ಲು (win) etc.
| ನಾನು ಬಿದ್ದೆ(ನು) | I fell |
| ನಾವು ಬಿದ್ದೆವು | We fell |
| ನೀನು ಬಿದ್ದೆ | You fell (singular) |
| ನೀವು ಬಿದ್ದಿರಿ | You fell (plural) |
| ಅವನು ಬಿದ್ದನು | He fell |
| ಅವಳು ಬಿದ್ದಳು | She fell |
| ಅವರು ಬಿದ್ದರು | They fell |
| ಅದು ಬಿದ್ದಿತು | It fell |
| ಅವು ಬಿದ್ದುವು | They fell (neuter) |
5. ಕಾಣು, ಉಣ್ಣು, ಕೊಳ್ಳು
| ನಾನು ಕಂಡೆ(ನು) | I saw |
| ನಾವು ಕಂಡೆವು | We saw |
| ನೀನು ಕಂಡೆ | You saw (sing.) |
| ನೀವು ಕಂಡಿರಿ | You saw (pl.) |
| ಅವನು ಕಂಡ(ನು) | He saw |
| ಅವಳು ಕಂಡಳು | She saw |
| ಅವರು ಕಂಡರು | They saw |
| ಅದು ಕಂಡಿತು | It saw |
| ಅವು ಕಂಡುವು | They saw (neuter) |
