Participles

There are two types of participles: 1. Adverbial participle and 2.Adjectival participle. The adverbial participles are followed by a finite verb. The adjectival participles are followed by a noun. When the subject performs two actions, the action that takes place before the second action is expressed by adverbial participle. This can be followed by a past or future finite verb or an imperative. The adjectival participle can be in the past adjectival or future adjectival form.

Adverbial participles (followed by present/future verbs)

ಅವನು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಆಡಿ ಗೆಲ್ಲುತ್ತಾನೆHaving played well, he will win/ He plays well and wins.
ಅವನನ್ನು ನಂಬಿ ಆಕೆ ಹಣ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾಳೆHaving believed him, she will give money/ She believes and gives money to him.
ನಾನು ನಾಳೆ ಬಂದು ಅವರ ಮನೆಗೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತೇನೆHaving come tomorrow, I will go to their house/ I will come and go to their house.
ನಾನು ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಬರೆದು ನಿಮಗೆ ಕಳುಹಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆHaving written the book, I will send it to you/I will write a book and send it to you.

Adverbial participles (followed by imperative)

ನೀನು ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಅವಳನ್ನು ನೋಡುHaving gone there, you see her/ You go there and see her.
ಆ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿ ಬಾHaving done that work, come (here)/ You do the work and come.
ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಆಡಿ ಗೆಲ್ಲುHaving played well, (you) win/ Play well and win.

Adjectival participles (past tense)

1.ಆಡುಆಡಿದwho, which or that played
ಹತ್ತುಹತ್ತಿದwho, which or that climbed
ಮಾಡುಮಾಡಿದwho, which or that did

1. Substitution drill

ಬಂದು ಹೋಗುತ್ತೇನೆ (ಬರು)

Use the following verbs and form sentences:

ತಿನ್ನು, ಕೊಂಡುಕೊಳ್ಳು, ಮಾಡು, ಬರೆ, ಕರೆ, ಹುಡುಕಿ ನೋಡು (ಹುಡುಕು), ಕ್ಷಮಿಸು, ಒಪ್ಪಿಸು

2. Translate the following into English.

2.1. ನಾನು ಆಡಿ ಗೆಲ್ಲುತ್ತೇನೆ.
2.2. ಅವನು ನಂಬಿ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾನೆ.
2.3. ಅವಳು ನಾಳೆ ಹಾಡುತ್ತಾಳೆ.
2.4. ಆತ ಹೋಗಿ ಬರುತ್ತಾನೆ.
2.5. ಅವಳು ಮಾಡಿ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ.
2.6. ಅವನನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ಬಾ.
2.7. ಅವಳನ್ನು ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಬಾ.
2.8. ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಬರೆದು ಕಳುಹಿಸು.
2.9. ಅವಳೇ ಟೆನಿಸ್ ಆಡಿದವಳು.
2.10. ಇದು ನಾನು ತಿಂದ ಹಣ್ಣು.
2.11. ಇದು ಆತ ಮಾಡಿದ ಕೆಲಸ.
2.12. ಇದು ಅವಳು ಓದುವ ಪುಸ್ತಕ.
